Community Lessons are a social recreational activity where students learn how to be with and take care of animals. This community-based offering lets students of all ages and abilities learn how to care for other creatures including horses, chickens, rabbits, and guinea pigs. Through activities like feeding, petting, grooming, mucking, bathing, and socializing with others, participants develop a sense of belonging and identity. All the animals at our Ranch are prey animals, which provides a unique type of interaction. These animals are dependent on their community to help take care of them and are quite sensitive to their environments. This lets students learn their intricacies and preferences while building relationships that feel safe and connected.
Community lessons are taught by a developmental specialist with an eye towards inclusivity, community engagement and intentional instruction. Environmental and activity modification are planned and ongoing through lessons for maximal safe and appropriate participation for clients of all abilities.
We do not do any horseback riding at Interwoven.
Community lessons are 45-minute sessions offered Monday-Thursday afternoons.
